Wellington, Ontario Wellington is a great little retirement community with a population of about 1,700 residents. Once called Smokeville after a local First Nations elder, the name was changed in the 1860s to Wellington. Today Wellington is a warm, friendly village situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, overlooking the largest freshwater dunes in the world - the Sandbanks. Wellington's Main Street, known as the Loyalist Parkway, dates back to 1799. From the lakeside park (a place to let the kids play or to have a picnic), to the public beach and boardwalk, everything is close to the village centre. Wellington is truly a great place to live, and a wonderful place to visit.
